I’m going to file this under “failure to win a war”…for the opposing side that is…There’s nothing like sitting at home in the good old USofA and flying your remote control plane on the other side of the world, blowing things up with a chilled Coke in one hand and a joystick in the other. Best “video game” ever!!
The Air Force this fall will deploy a new generation of pilotless airplane with the bombing power of an F-16 to help stop the stubborn Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan.
The Reaper is an upgraded version of the Predator, which has become one of the military’s most sought-after planes since it first appeared in Afghanistan in 2001. The Reaper can fly three times as fast as a Predator and carry eight times more weaponry, such as Hellfire missiles, the Air Force said.
The Reaper’s greater range and speed make it better suited than the Predator to Afghanistan with its vast, rugged terrain. The Reaper will also be deployed to Iraq. Its speed and arms will let it track and kill moving targets able to elude a Predator, said Brig. Gen. James Poss, director of intelligence for Air Combat Command at Langley Air Force Base, Va.

Can’t fail much worse than this…
An IBM server worth $1.4 million was wrecked after it fell off a forklift during shipping. Now the customer is suing — claiming that the computer maker failed to properly package the high-end business system.
Federal contractor T.R. Systems says its workers were moving the server from a freight truck into its warehouse in Alexandria, Va., when the mishap occurred. “The rear wheels of their forklift hit the raised surface at the entry door of the warehouse, causing the forklift to rock, and subsequently causing the server to rock,” T.R. Systems says in court papers filed last month.
“As a result of the rocking motion, the base of the pallet and the crate broke and the crate fell onto the curb, damaging the server packed inside,” the contractor states in papers filed in U.S. District Court in Alexandria, Va.

Mars Exploration Rover Status Report: Rovers Resume Driving
After six weeks of hunkering down during raging dust storms that limited solar power, both of NASA’s Mars Exploration Rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, have resumed driving.
Opportunity advanced 13.38 meters (44 feet) toward the edge of Victoria Crater on Aug. 21. Mission controllers were taking advantage of gradual clearing of dust from the sky while also taking precautions against buildup of dust settling onto the rover.

Life is like an internet router…there’s some good packets and some bad packets, but most of it is just BS.
I route therefor I am.
All these blinking lights are really cool…for the first week.
It’s 2007, I’ve expected to see more blue LED’s on servers by now.
You can never have too many Cisco reference books…even if they all say the same thing.
I’ve just noticed that one of our routers is bigger than the refrigerator in the office.
If routers route the packets of an email, does that make them an interweb post office?
You can keep all kinds of pets like hamsters and guinea pigs under the raised floor.
Short range Gbics seem like a good starting point for do-it-yourself Lasik surgery.

Voyager Celebrates Thirty Years in Space
NASA’s two venerable Voyager spacecraft are celebrating three decades of flight as they head toward interstellar space. Their ongoing odysseys mark an unprecedented and historic accomplishment.
Voyager 2 launched on August 20, 1977, and Voyager 1 launched on September 5, 1977. They continue to return information from distances more than three times farther away than Pluto.

School uniforms track kids
Parents already have a way to monitor kids’ phone calls and text messages, and soon they might have the means to track children wearing school uniforms.
An English manufacturer of uniforms is considering adding satellite tracking devices to its line of school clothing so that parents can locate their child’s whereabouts at all times, according to an article from the Daily Telegraph in Australia. The manufacturer, Lancashire-based Trutex, believes there is a demand for such clothing. In a recent survey of its own, the company found that 59 percent of 800 parents surveyed were interested in buying uniforms with embedded Global Positioning Systems.

You know…any halfway smart kid is going to find a way around this…the really smart kids are going to have fun with it. They didn’t have cool stuff like this to reverse engineer back when I was in school…kids are so lucky these days.

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070816-major-skype-outage-in-progress-12-24-hours-for-a-fix.html
Hello everyone,
It’s been a very hectic few days around Skype but I am really pleased to say that since the early hours of Saturday morning Skype has been back to normal. I’d like to take this opportunity to say a big, heart-felt thank you to all our users who contacted us with messages of support. It’s the little things that make all the difference in a crisis. We’re very sorry that Skype was unavailable because we know how much people enjoy using it. But we’re back now and we’re stronger. For more information about what happened, please take a look at our Heartbeat blog. In the meantime, thank you to everyone again – you make the Skype community what it is today.
Niklas Zennström
CEO, Skype
This comes after a week of my boss requesting that everyone install and use Skype to talk to one another…fail?
